Our government takes Green Infrastructure and climate resilient communities seriously. This government has committed unprecedented amounts of federal funding for flood mitigation and disaster-related projects in Alberta. In 2016-2017, the Government of Canada committed $63.2 million to Alberta flood mitigation projects based on the priorities of local and provincial governments.
From 2006 to 2014, Infrastructure Canada investment in flood mitigation for Alberta was $0.
As a more general update, in the last year we have approved over 100 infrastructure projects just in Alberta — totaling more than $4.3 billion. This is more than the last five years of the previous government – combined.
Despite these accomplishments, we know there is much more to do to ensure flood mitigation projects are completed in order to protect Calgary communities.
It takes a coordinated approach between the federal, provincial, and civic governments to create climate resilient communities. The Government of Canada contributes up to 50% of eligible costs on infrastructure projects like flood mitigation investments. For example, in 2016-2017 Infrastructure Canada approved $10.5 million for flood mitigation projects in Calgary and additional funds (listed below) leading to more effective watershed management.
Working with our provincial and municipal partners we are continuing to identify projects that would benefit from Infrastructure Canada funding.
