Immigration

[Source]

Canada is a country of immigrants. Diversity is our strength and has shaped our economic prosperity and our success as a nation. The math shows it – and it makes our country unique on the world stage.

Our immigration system continues to be based on compassion, efficiency, and economic opportunity for all – one that strengthens the middle class, attracts investment, supports diversity, and helps build vibrant, dynamic, and inclusive communities.

Our government is also committed to offering protection to those seeking asylum from war, terror, and persecution – without compromising the safety and security of Canadians. Along with Canadians, our government proudly believes in the value of resettlement and helping those in need of protection. The Syrian refugees are doing as well as other refugee groups historically, and their integration in the first year is going as expected. Many of the recently resettled Syrian refugees are adjusting well and already giving back to the communities that have welcomed them.

Immigration creates growth and jobs. Because of this, in 2017 we as a government launched our Global Skills Strategy. Our government’s Global Skills Strategy will make it easier for companies doing business in Canada to hire highly trained people, both in Canada and abroad, and will position our country as a global innovation leader.

Our government is also working on implementing reforms and bettering our immigration system. One way we have done so is that, in cooperation with the Government of Alberta, we haves banned hiring Temporary Foreign Workers for 29 high-skilled jobs in Alberta. This program is currently a pilot. We’re always interested in good ideas, to better our country — better is always possible — and to make sure that Canadians have the first shot at good paying jobs. We will be following the progress of the pilot very closely and all of that data will help inform us, but we are certainly open to replicating across Canada it if it show success in Alberta.

We have also reformed our immigration with C-6. Our Government places great value on Canadian citizenship and is committed to helping newcomers achieve citizenship faster while also protecting the integrity of the program.

Bill C-6, which reinstates equitable treatment for citizens regardless of their background and which reverses the barriers to citizenship put in place by the previous Government. Bill C-6 proposes to eliminate two-tiered citizenship, restore time credit for temporary residents, provide greater flexibility in meeting the residence, language and knowledge requirements, remove the intent to reside provision, as well as further enhance program integrity.
